There has been a Club for gardeners in Bridport since the 1850s. Though its priorities may have changed over the years it currently aims to provide a forum where like-minded people can meet together in a convivial, social atmosphere to share their common interests in the many varied aspects of gardening.
The Club meets on the third Thursday of the month at the WI Hall, North Street, Bridport starting at 7.30 pm. A varied programme of talks is arranged for the year aiming to cater for a wide range of garden-related topics. Entry to the meeting is free to members, with tea and biscuits provided.
There is also an enjoyable programme of coach outings arranged at roughly monthly intervals through the “open season”, a Christmas Shopping trip and a well-subscribed Christmas lunch rounds off the social calendar. In addition the Club usually arranges an annual holiday.
Two Shows are staged each year: in the Spring (late March/early April) and a late Summer Show, on the first Saturday of September. All classes are open and cater for a range of horticultural and domestic crafts.
Three Newsletters are produced each year to keep members informed of the Club’s activities and to provide a forum for members to keep in touch with each other. The Club is affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society and to the Dorset and Somerset Federations.
The membership fee has been held down at £5 per household for several years now and this can easily be recouped many times over through the 10% discount given by Groves to our members.
