Prunus spinosa / Tolerates poor soil & coastal sites. Chalk or clay soils.
Spiny, black branches are covered in pretty, white flowers in the spring followed by sloe berries in the autumn. Great for bees and butterflies. Ideal choice for a native mixed hedge.
Site/soil: Grow in moist soil in sun or partial shade.
Plant out: 30-45cm (12-18") apart
Approx growth rate: 30cm (1ft) per year.
Maintenance: Prune deciduous hedging in winter.
